Meet Our Ambassadors

  • Dr Candice Howarth is the Head of Local Climate Action at the London School of Economics Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, overseeing the Institute’s work on extreme heat preparedness in the UK.

In 2024, she was awarded a Fellowship by the British Academy on “Achieving climate-resilient net zero: combining climate adaptation and mitigation measures to support emergency responses to extreme heat in London” in collaboration with the British Red Cross, and is the UK lead for the Horizon 2020 €6,2 million riskADAPT project exploring adaptation solutions to climate impacts in the EU. Until April 2024, when the programme came to an end, she was Co-Director of the £3,5 million Place-based Climate Action Network (PCAN).

Candice has led and contributed to projects totalling £9.8 million on local climate governance, resilience to extreme heat, where adaptation fits in climate governance and how co-production of knowledge can be used to better inform climate decision-making.

She has an interdisciplinary background in climate policy and pro-environmental behaviour with degrees in meteorology (BSc), climate change (MSc) and a PhD in climate policy and pro-environmental behaviour. She has extensive experience in qualitative research design, delivery and analysis of semi-structured interviews, workshop and focus groups.

Candice is truly passionate about building the UK’s resilience to extreme heat, which is becoming more likely to be a risk the country will be exposed to under a changing climate.
